The Lyndon House is holding its opening reception for the facility’s Summer Series on Thursday. The event features five exhibitions, including the community-wide Pet Portraits exhibition. There are 169 works of art, spotlighting dogs and cats and as Executive Director Andrea Wellnitz explains, artists of all ages also contributed works featuring less common companion animals.
“Celebrating many of the pets that all of us love,” Wellnitz said. “We have 87 dogs, we have 58 cats, we have horses, we have birds, we have fish, we have bunnies, we have goats, reptiles, we even have a piglet in there. And there are many other companion animals too and those portraits do really reflect the bond that we have with our pets.”
Organizers are also holding a pet supply drive benefiting the Athens-Clarke County Animal Services Shelter. Attendees are asked to consider making donations.
“So, when you visit this exhibition, any time between the opening reception, between June 18 and August 29, during regular open hours, we are collecting toys, towels, treats, and all types of food, unopened food. Both wet and dry for cats and dogs. We will be collecting that and then we will be dropping it off at the Athens-Clarke County Animal Shelter.”
The reception is Thursday from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Lyndon House Arts Center.
