Ahead of the November Midterms, Athenians are asking for a longer early voting period.
The November midterms are four months away and the Athens-Clarke County Board of elections is gearing up for a full scale turn out.
Several Athenians attended the city’s board of elections meeting on July 7, to encourage the board to find a balance between prioritizing voters and supporting voter staff.
One commenter, Adam Shirley, asked that the board keep voting booths open until 7:00PM during the final weekdays of early voting for the upcoming election while not compromising the safety of staff.
He said, “It doesn’t have to be staff or the voters, that's a false choice I think. “
The public commenters that followed echoed Shirley’s request. Tensions around voting are high as local voters worry about potential voter interference in the wake of ballots being seized in Fulton County this past January.
