Statement from the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) regarding ICE action in Athens:
Over the past several days, we have become aware of a significant ICE presence throughout the Athens area. Many of our immigrant neighbors have been detained, and we are still working to determine how many families have been affected. Based on the cases we have confirmed so far, it appears that none of the individuals detained had a criminal record.
Among those impacted is a family who has four adults taken, leaving behind their 11-year-old daughter without her parents. Across the community, ICE agents have conducted operations that have left many families living in fear and uncertainty. We had hoped Athens would be spared from this kind of trauma, but that is no longer the reality our community faces.
As an organization, we stand firmly against ICE and what we believe are abusive and unconstitutional enforcement tactics. We believe immigrants are an essential part of the Athens community, that families belong together, and that those who wield government authority must be held accountable for their actions.
Now is the time for our community to come together. We encourage everyone to stay informed, know your rights, and speak out against policies that separate families and spread fear. If you are able, send a donation to our working group SIFIC (Support for Immigrant Families in Crisis) so that we can continue to provide financial support for legal fees and living expenses to those affected by these tragedies. We will continue sharing verified information as we learn more and remain committed to standing alongside our immigrant neighbors. An attack on one part of our community affects all of us, and we will not stop advocating for dignity, justice, and the right of every family to live without fear.
