The Athens-Clarke County Government is inviting local artists to submit ideas for an interior mural to be painted in the new Eastside Library coming to Athens soon. The selected artists will work with government officials and library stakeholders to enhance the experience of going to the library, while also celebrating and representing the city of Athens.
The stakeholder group for the new library laid out some key themes for the mural to follow: literacy, storytelling, local history, literary themes, learning and community. The mural should be an expression of the vibrant and diverse Athens community.
This mural project is open to professional artists who are 18 years or older and are not employed by the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government. Preferred candidates have experience working with and on public art projects and community government.
Finalists will be selected at some point in September, and those chosen will provide a title and description of the art concept for the mural, including materials and a timeline for producing and installing the artwork and a budget that details all costs related. The finalists will also provide up to five images of the proposed design, either hand-drawn, computer-generated, or photographic examples.
$350 will be paid to the finalists.
