Construction on the new St. Mary’s Center for Heart, Vascular and Neurosciences will begin Friday morning.
The St. Mary’s Health Care System is inviting the public to a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at 1230 Baxter Street.
The 15,000-square-foot center is expected to open next October and it will help the hospital’s focus on treatment of stroke, heart attack, blood vessel disease and cancer.
Among the features of the new CHVN is state-of-the-art 4D CT imaging, expanded rapid-response stroke services and a dedicated electrophysiology laboratory for the diagnosis and treatment of dangerous heart rhythm disorders.
Stonish Pierce, the president and CEO of Trinity Health Georgia, said that the CHVN represents a $34.6 million investment in the health of the community. According to Pierce, it is the most significant improvement to the St. Mary’s structure since 2005.
“Our area’s population continues to grow and the need for life-saving and life-improving healthcare services continues to grow with it,” Pierce said in a press release. “As part of Trinity Health, we are committed to meeting the needs of our patients and the communities we serve for top-quality, innovative and compassionate care.”
The groundbreaking ceremony is free and co-hosted by the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce. There will be food and giveaways, as well as brief comments from those involved.
