The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has made an arrest in connection with a possible sexual assault that happened in downtown Athens on August 21.
On Tuesday, 49-year-old Athens man Timothy Evans was charged with financial transaction card theft, financial transaction card fraud, and identity fraud in connection with the case. A release from the ACCPD states additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
On August 21, police responded to a local hospital regarding a possible sexual assault that happened near City Hall in downtown Athens.
According to a police report, a 20-year-old University of Georgia student last remembered drinking with friends in downtown Athens around midnight last Thursday. She told police she woke up early Friday on cardboard boxes near a homeless man who was touching himself.
The police report said the UGA student could not find her phone or purse. She told police that she was escorted home by “two kind older homeless men” before sunrise.
According to the report, she contacted police and described the location where the instance occurred. The police concluded that the location was near City Hall, the police report said.
Saturday afternoon UGA sent out a community notification saying detectives were questioning a person of interest.
