A long-standing Athens nonprofit dedicated to eradicating domestic violence is gearing up for a fundraising event this weekend.
Project Safe is hosting Groovy Nights this Saturday. Will McCranie is the director of development and community engagement at the organization. He says the Lip Sync Battle is a fun-filled way to support a serious mission.
“Project Safe is the organization serving survivors of domestic violence in Clarke, Madison, Oglethorpe, and Oconee counties,” according to McCranie. “We operate a family protection center, serving people who don’t want or need a confidentially located shelter, we also operate a confidentially located emergency shelter, as well as two thrift stores.”McCranie says competitors and attendees can expect dancing to classic music and more.
“We’ll have a DJ there playing all of your retro favorites; and we’re considering retro 70s, 80s, and 90s, as much as it pains me to admit that the 90s are retro now. We’ll have a bit of a dance party; we’ll have 10 teams lip syncing to some of your favorite hits. There’ll be food from many of your favorite local food places. That’s included with your ticket price, and a cash bar.”
The Lip Sync Battle features competitors and attendees dancing to classic music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
Groovy Nights takes place Saturday, September 19 at the VFW, at 8 pm.
