Athens News Matters: UGA Researchers Use Pig Brains to Delve Into Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, CTE

In the animal kingdom, pigs sometimes get a bad rap. We frequently use insults such as “filthy as a pig” in our daily conversations. But, perhaps we should change this to “helpful as a pig,” as pigs might play a critical role in helping to research Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). University of Georgia Regenerative Bioscience Center researchers Franklin West and Qun Zhao join the program to discuss their work with Chris Shupe.

Chris Shupe was the Program Director of WUGA from 2014-2022. Shupe may be best known as The Athens King, a tribute to Elvis Presley, which often included an 8 piece show band! After two years as a part-time announcer, Chris Shupe joined WUGA full time as the station’s Morning Edition Host and Assistant Operations Director. He was later promoted to PD in 2014.
