Local COVID-19 Cases Remain High

Local COVID-19 cases remain high due to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Athens-Clarke County reported 164 PCR and antigen cases on January 10th, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. The PCR percent positive rate is 41%

Region E hospitals—the region that includes Athens—report 97% ICU occupancy and 37% of all hospital patients in the region are COVID-19 patients.

As of midday today, St. Mary’s and Piedmont Athens Regional, are both on total diversion status—meaning EMS cannot accept patients at this time. Both hospitals also report the emergency departments as severely overcrowded, according to the Georgia Coordinating Center.

At the University of Georgia, the COVID-19 response committee emailed a survey last week to members of the university community. The survey takes only a few minutes to complete and asks for input on COVID-19 related issues, including safety issues and work accommodations. A link to the survey can be found on our website at WUGA dot ORG.
