Commissioner Ovita Thornton discusses platform for District 9 race

Ovita Thornton has represented District 9 on the Athens-Clarke County Commission since 2019 and recently announced her campaign for re-election. Commissioner Thornton sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss her platform—and how the Commission can address the gap in trust between the elected body and the community.

Local end-of-life doula hosts community discussions about death

Death can be difficult to discuss—but that’s just what local end-of-life doula Jessica Dukes wants people to do more often. She organizes a monthly destigmatizing discussion at Athentic Brewery with the nationwide movement Death Over Drafts. The next event will be held on September 23rd from 6 to 8 pm. Dukes sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to learn more: are these events morbid, or something else entirely?

Local nonprofit sees record level of need, expands high-interest loan and pawn refinancing

The Ark is a local nonprofit that helps local low-income households with financial planning, particularly aiding people caught in cycles of debt from high-interest loans and pawns. Lucy Hudgens is the Executive Director of The Ark, and Stephanie Cockfield is a financial educator with the organization. They sat down with WUGA's Alexia Ridley to discuss their services.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
