Today on Athens News Matters, hear the results of this week’s primary runoff election. Also, the director of the University of Georgia’s Weather Network, Pam Knox, has retired.

UGA expert reviews primary runoff results

Several key partisan and nonpartisan races were on the ballot Tuesday, June 16th in the runoff election. Voters in Georgia decided who would be the Republican candidates for both Senate and Governor races. Meanwhile, Athens-Clarke County voters chose the next mayor and filled two contested commission seats.

Charles Bullock is the Richard B. Russell Chair in Political Science at the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia. He sat down with WUGA’s Havivah Saltz to discuss this week’s election results.

The past and present of Athens drag with Kellie Divine

It’s June, and although the local Pride Parade has passed, Pride Month isn’t over yet. Miss Kellie Divine is a local drag queen and the founder and director of the Athens Showgirl Cabaret, a drag company which performs monthly at local venues. Kellie sat down with WUGA’s Havivah Saltz for Pride Month to discuss the history and present of drag in Athens.

Celebrating the retirement of UGA agricultural climatologist Pam Knox

Pam Knox has spent her career as an agricultural climatologist and the director of the University of Georgia’s Weather Network. And, she’s been a frequent guest on WUGA. She has observed climate data in Georgia for over 25 years. Now, she’s officially retired. She sat down with WUGA’s Alexzundra Tillman for a look back on her career, and a look forward at the future of Georgia’s climate.

Havivah Saltz has been with WUGA since 2023 as an on-air host and the producer for African Perspectives. She got her start in radio on WOBC FM at Oberlin College (class of ‘23), and she’s also an on-air host on Athens' Power 100.1 and Magic 102.1. Outside of work, you can find Havivah making art, writing fiction, practicing Japanese, petting her very round cat, and watching concerning amounts of TV.
Alexzundra Tillman is a part-time reporter and producer. She is currently pursuing her masters degree in Film and Television studies at UGA and hopes to work at the cross section of these two fields in the future.
