Firefly Trail Race Series Kicks Off

The 2022 Firefly Trail Race Series kicks of this weekend. Saturday’s Winterville Snowflake 10K is the first of four events planned to raise awareness and support for the Firefly Trail. John Kissane is the Trail Development Coordinator.

“We’re really excited, this is the third year that the Firefly Trail series has existed and it’s been very successful, so we’re really excited.”

The other races are the Maxey’s Model Mile 5K in May, Crawford hosts the Restoration Run 5K on Labor Day and the final event is Union Point’s 5K held on the last Saturday in September.

Kissane says benefits of trails like the Firefly include a variety of benefits ranging from health, safety, social and economic.

“There will be some outside visitors who come in for events, but also to just explore this part of the state, so we’re confident that the full trail, when completed, will draw in some visitors and they will be spending money in the area,” Kissane said. “We think that that economic stimulus will actually be noticeable and helpful in these small towns.”

Once completed, the Firefly will stretch 39 miles from Athens to Union Point, Georgia. Visit firelfytrail.com for more information.
