Athens Area Habitat for Humanity announces construction of 40 homes

Athens Banner-Herald

Families with children attending Gaines Elementary School may qualify for reduced income housing as soon as this fall.

Earlier today, Sen. Jon Ossoff granted Athens Area Habitat for Humanity nearly $3 million dollars for 40 homes for families with children attending Gaines Elementary and 15 homes for unhoused students coming out of the foster system.

According to Habitat, Athens-Clarke County ranks second to last for homeownership statewide. Marketing Director Paul Farr says Athens needs long-term housing solutions.

State Rep. Spencer Frye, Executive Director for Athens Area Habitat for Humanity explained how the nonprofit will run the 11-acre neighborhood.

According to Frye, Habitat will build each house according to individual families’ needs.

Habitat is in communication with the ACC officials in establishing a timeline for project construction.
