Hundreds of Georgia bridges can't handle heavier trucks allowed by new law

Library of Congress

At least 700 Georgia bridges can't handle heavier trucks allowed by a new law, according to state officials.

Earlier this year, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a law that increased the weight limit for trucks carrying commodities from 80,000 pounds to 88,000 pounds.

Transportation officials say that over 700 Georgia bridges cannot safely handle the increased weight.

Groups supporting the increase in weight say the change could make the difference between profit and loss in the low-margin trucking industry.

Opponents say the increased weight limits will cause more damage to the roads. Increased stopping distance could also cause more crashes.

The higher weight limits will last until July 1st, 2025.
