A federal task force is now involved in the search for a man accused of killing a UGA student in a DUI-related accident.

In the early morning of February 13, 2023, doctoral student Beth Buchanan was driving her mother to the airport in Atlanta after she visited for a long weekend. They were on Highway 316 near Winder when a car traveling on the wrong side of the highway slammed into their westbound vehicle. Beth died on impact. Her mother, Julie Olson-Buchanan, was critically injured.

Cesar Macias is charged with DUI and vehicular homicide. He was hospitalized following the crash and was wheelchair-bound with two broken legs, a broken arm, and other injuries, staying at his parents’ home.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office arranged for a transport van to take Macias back to Winder. When they returned, Macias and his mother had disappeared.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
