Athens Mayoral Candidates

Sharon Miller is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and a pastor in Athens. She’s also one of five candidates to enter the race for mayor of Athens-Clarke County.

Mara Zuniga recently announced her campaign to become the next mayor of Athens-Clarke County. She previously pursued the office in 2022, losing to incumbent Kelly Girtz.

Mara Zúñiga, a 2022 mayoral contender and former Treasurer of the Clark County Republican Party, announced her bid for mayor in a press release Wednesday.

She is currently a member of the Clarke County School District Board of Education, representing parts of southwest Athens in District 7.

Clarke County Board of Education member Dr. LaKeisha Gantt has announced that she will be running for Mayor of Athens in next year’s election.

Longtime local politician and community organizer Tim Denson announced in June that he is joining the race for Athens’ next mayor.

Though the election of Athens-Clarke County’s next mayor is just under a year away, two candidates have already entered the race.

Fisher says his campaign will focus on his extensive history of community service and civic engagement.
