Victim of pedestrian crash on Athens highway identified

After requesting help from the Athens community, the ACCPD has been able to identify the victim of last week’s fatal crash.

Officials have identified the victim of the fatal pedestrian crash that occurred October 26th at the intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 72. The victim, Elmer Gualna-Mez was 22 years old. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene after being struck while crossing Highway 29.

Officers have arrested the driver and charged him with Homicide by Vehicle in the 1st Degree and Driving Under the Influence.

The Athens Clarke County Police is still requesting any witnesses of the accident to contact the department.

This is the seventh fatal crash of 2025 in Athens-Clarke County.
