Snowballs and sledding: UGA students thrive in snowy conditions

For the second weekend in a row, Athens bundled up for a winter storm Saturday.

Georgians like Nick Tootle, a member of the fraternity Alpha Gamma Rho, don’t see this kind of weather every day.

“Most of us are from Georgia," said Tootle, "This is our second snow day in a year, and we hadn't had one before that in like 10 years. So it's really great. We're all grateful for this.”

Tootle and other fraternity members enjoyed the snow in a sort of unorthodox way by firing up their grill.

“We're out here cooking dogs, not just for the brothers, but for anybody who really wants to come by and eat a dog, and we're just kind of throwing snowballs hanging out,” he said.

Other University of Georgia students like Karina Boyadjiev and Sawyer Crothers also found ways to play in the snow, making do with what they had.

“We got some cardboard boxes and a laundry basket, and we're going sledding and, like, rolling down the snow,” Boyadjiev said.

Crothers added, “We’ve just been wandering around, kind of just seeing the sights. But, yeah, it's been really– we're pretty cold, but it's been fun.”

In total, Athens got about three inches of snow this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
