UGA student dies after being hit by a rolling vehicle

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a single vehicle crash which left a UGA student dead.

The ACCPD responded to a single-car crash in the 300 block of Peabody Street on January 28th. Officers determined that the parked vehicle began rolling in reverse and struck and rolled over the driver, George Whittenburg, who was standing outside the driver’s door.

The car continued to roll backwards and hit an unoccupied vehicle and a tree before coming to a complete stop. Whittenburg sustained visible injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He later died on January 30th after succumbing to his injuries.

Whittenburg was a 21-year-old UGA student from Austin, Texas.

This crash marks the first traffic fatality in Athens-Clarke County this year. This incident remains under active investigation. Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact Senior Police Officer James Trotter at 762-400-7326.
