During Athens-Clarke County’s Mayor and Commission meeting, scheduled February 17, the commission will discuss the recapture and relocation of $6.2 million distributed through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

ARPA funds were distributed across America in 2021 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Athens-Clarke County was granted over $57 million dollars during that same year.

During the February 17th meeting, the Mayor and Commission will take under consideration whether to recapture funds that have yet to be spent on other projects and relocating them to the courthouse elevator repair and road paving. ARPA funds could be recaptured from the Athens Land Trust, the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, and Quality Care for Children.

This recommendation includes denying the recapture of funds from First American Bank & Trust. The U.S. Treasury Department requires ARPA funds to be obligated and contracted by the end of this year.
