The University of Georgia School of Medicine will team up with several organizations Wednesday to host a forum on how UGA students can participate in serving unsheltered people in Athens.

The new UGA School of Medicine is working with other UGA departments, as well as local nonprofits like the Athens Homeless Coalition, to organize a forum on the Unhoused and Homelessness for UGA students Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Sanford Hall.

Meg Rooney works for the Spiritual Wellbeing program with the Department of Religion at UGA, one of the event’s organizers. She says serving the community is a part of many faiths represented on campus.

“A lot of faiths are connected to service, service being a huge part of their wellbeing and their connection to other people,” says Rooney.

Rooney says the forum will help students learn how they can participate in relief efforts for the unsheltered community.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
