Local activist group encourages Athenians to remember their rights
In light of the recent ICE activity in the city, the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) has released a statement.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have been seen in Athens, and according to the AIRC, ICE has made multiple arrests, including the arrest of four individuals from one family, which leaves one 11-year-old girl without her parents.
The statement encourages the entirety of Athens to remain informed and to know their rights. The AIRC is also collecting donations for The Support For Immigrant Families In Crisis (SIFIC), which offers help to families who are experiencing the trauma of family separation, violence, persecution, financial loss, or medical crises.
Local artist and activist Beto Mendoza says that the current events are not an isolated incident and that what's happening in Athens reflects what is happening all around the nation. And he urges community members to consider how their amendment rights are being affected.
