The AIRC is keeping the Athens community informed on ICE activity.
The Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) says that they are aware of 11 people having been detained by ICE, since July 16th.
The president of the Board at the AIRC, Alys Willman, says the coalition has been preparing for this.
“... we knew this was coming two years ago, and now it’s here in our community, and the most important thing we can do right now is to know our neighbors, to keep an eye out. If you are not vulnerable then try to keep an eye out. Ask how your neighbors are doing, see if they need anything,” Willman said.
Willman also says that it's been encouraging to see how the community has rallied together during this time, including nearly 200 volunteers who can drive vulnerable individuals to doctor’s appointments and immigration appointments.
The AIRC has been keeping community members informed through their hotline and their rapid response team which confirms sightings of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). More information on how to help or to receive support can be found on the AIRC website.
WUGA has reached out to ICE’s media office for a comment on their increased activity in Athens, but they had not responded by the time of this post.
