New ACCGov CIO and IT Department director appointed

Hemant Desai

Hemant Desai has been appointed as the new chief information officer and Information Technology Department director for the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government.

The appointment was made by Athens-Clarke County Unified Government manager Bob Cowell. Desai will step into the role beginning Sept. 26.

Desai has over 20 years of experience in the sphere of technology leadership. His previous roles include chief information officer for the International City/County Management Association and chief information officer for the Guilford County Government in North Carolina.

Desai holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Maharaja Sayajirao University in India, as well as an MBA in technology management from the University of Phoenix. He also holds certifications from the Project Management Institute and Microsoft.

Jason Luzinga is currently serving as the interim chief information officer.

Maura Potvin is a senior journalism major at the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, she plans to pursue a master's degree in Emerging Media from UGA and hopes to work in the news industry and continue to share her passion for storytelling.
