Athens-Clarke County is currently averaging one fatal crash a month.
A 78-year old woman from Athens has passed away after a fatal crash. On September 10, 2026, Helen Blackmon is believed to have been traveling northbound on Jefferson Road and attempted to turn left onto Lakeland Drive when she collided with a 2025 Chevrolet Traverse traveling southbound.
Blackmon, who was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, was transported to a local hospital along with the other driver. Blackmon succumbed to her injuries on September 13, 2026.
This is the ninth fatal crash of 2026 in Athens.
