Steven Strickland hopes to represent conservative values in state Senate

Next year, voters in Northeast Georgia’s Senate District 46 will decide their new state senator. The district covers several counties, including Clarke, Oconee, Walton, Barrow, and Gwinnett. Republican senator Bill Cowsert currently represents District 46 and is now running to be the state’s next Attorney General.

Two candidates have announced their campaigns to succeed Cowsert. WUGA’s Alexia Ridley sat down with Oconee County’s Steven Strickland, a Republican, to discuss his qualifications. Here’s that conversation.

William Gaulden is the vice chair of the Democratic Party of Athens-Clarke County. He has also joined the race for Senate District 46. WUGA’s Alexia Ridley sat down with him to discuss his platform. Here’s that conversation.

Athens Homeless Coalition launches newspaper to empower the unsheltered 

The Athens Homeless Coalition aims to bring together different organizations serving the unsheltered individuals of Athens to solve the crisis of homelessness.

This summer, the coalition started a twice-monthly public discussion that gathers residents around the common goal of ending homelessness in Clarke County. They’re also set to launch a so-called “street newspaper” meant to empower people living without shelter.

WUGA’s Emma Auer met up with Michael Moss, the Athens Homeless Coalition’s Community Engagement Coordinator, to discuss the ways he and his colleagues are engaging both the housed public and people living without a fixed address. Here’s that conversation.

Conflicts at Athens anti-Trump protests reflect affective polarization

Thousands of Northeast Georgians attended the No Kings protest in Athens last month to voice their dissent with President Donald Trump’s administration. The gathering also drew some vocal counter protestors. WUGA’s Mary Ryan Howarth witnessed several tense moments during the event, and brings us this feature about how these conflicts in Athens reflect national trends.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
Mary Ryan Howarth is a recent graduate from the University of Georgia. She started as an intern at WUGA and quickly became a part-time reporter and producer. She also contributes to Athens News Matters and the Georgia Health Report. Some of Mary Ryan's interests include reading, arts and crafts, and running her podcast with her mom, HowARTh Gallery Gossip.
