The press conference will be held on Monday, July 14th at 11:00 am. It will take place at the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office Training Center at 2900 County Farm Road. The press conference comes after the third death of an inmate within the Athens-Clarke County Jail since April.
The inmate who died was found unresponsive in his housing unit on Tuesday, July 8th. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No further information has been released. In addition to the recent death, two other inmates were found unresponsive from possible drug overdoses.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the latest death. While the autopsy report for the death of Shabazz Wingfield, 32, who died April 22nd, has been released, the autopsy of Torrance Bernard Bishop, 39, who died May 5th, has yet to be published.
The autopsy report shows Wingfield died from the toxic effects of methamphetamine and fentanyl, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
