The University of Georgia School of Medicine received a accreditation Friday that allows them to start recruiting physicians.

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) granted UGA preliminary accreditation. The university can now start recruiting and admitting the inaugural class for the new School of Medicine. Applications for the school will open in the next couple weeks for fall 2026.

The LCME is jointly sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association.

Founding Dean Shelley Nuss says this is a remarkable opportunity because accreditation allows the school “to move forward in preparing physicians who will serve our communities.”

This designation follows a rigorous evaluation of the school, and the LCME will continue to assess the medical school on the path to full accreditation.
