The crash that occurred at the intersection of North Avenue and MLK Parkway has come to a sad conclusion.

The driver of the 2000 Dodge Caravan that crashed on North Avenue in early March succumbed to his injuries on March 23rd.

Athens-Clarke County police concluded that the driver, David Smith, was driving southbound on North Avenue when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a curb and trestle pillar. The vehicle then struck the embankment and rolled onto its side. Smith was partially ejected from the vehicle.

On the day of the initial accident, March 7th, he sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Smith died two weeks later. He was 47 years old.

This is the fourth fatal crash of 2026.
